On 3rd October, Amity Uganda took an important step in advancing its mission to empower young women by officially handing over a sewing machine to New Hope Creative Learning Centre. This marked a new chapter in efforts to empower teenage mothers with practical hands-on skills that promote self-reliance, resilience and sustainable livelihoods in communities.
Many teenage mothers face challenges after early motherhood from dropping out of school to struggling with limited economic opportunities and social stigma. For most, their dreams are put on hold as they focus on survival and caring for their children. Recognizing these struggles, Amity Uganda partnered with New Hope Creative Learning Centre to create pathways for economic empowerment through skills training in tailoring and design. The sewing machines symbolize more than a tool for stitching fabric, they represent a chance for teenage mothers to rebuild their confidence, restore their dignity and regain control over their futures.
Elvis Twikirize in his speech said that “At Amity Uganda, we believe in creating opportunities where resilience meets potential, when a girl gains a skill, she gains more than a trade; she secures a path to economic independence.” Through the partnership, New Hope Creative Learning Centre will provide complete training to the girls. By the end of the training, the young mothers will not only be able to sew and design clothes but also manage their own small businesses and contribute meaningfully to their communities. The goal is to ensure that every young mother who joins the program leaves with confidence, capability and a vision for her future. The initiative aims to break cycles of dependency by equipping girls with skills that open doors to self-sufficiency.
The Director of New Hope expressed her excitement saying, “This opportunity means a lot to us. We now have something that can help the girls earn a living and take care of their children. Most of these girls never thought they could have a second chance, but through partnerships like this one, their hopes are restored.” Stories like hers are the reason Amity Uganda continues to invest in skills-based empowerment programs. The organization believes that empowering one girl can uplift an entire community because when girls thrive, families and societies also grow stronger.
As the world continues to push for gender equality and economic inclusion, projects like this serve as a reminder that true empowerment begins at the grassroots level and by providing girls and young mothers with the tools, knowledge and opportunities they need to shape their destinies. Every stitch made on those sewing machines tells a story of courage, resilience and hope. It tells the story of young women refusing to be defined by their past and instead using their hands, skills and determination to build brighter futures.
Amity Uganda’s commitment remains clear: to continue investing in girls’ potential, nurturing their talents and creating safe spaces where they can learn, grow and lead. Because when we empower a girl, we empower a generation. When we give her a skill, we give her a future and when we believe in her, she changes the world.
