While closing the #16DaysOfActivism, our members were happy to be part of the Selfcare event organised under the Brave Movement Uganda Consortium and this served as a served as a joyful reminder that self-care is an essential aspect of a healthy lifestyle. With support from Brave Movement, we meaningfully participated in a Self care session that emphasized the urgent need for advocates to prioritize their own well being. The event reflected how simple acts of self-love—taking time for a mindfulness break, opting for nutritious food, or embracing a positive outlook—can make a difference in overall well-being.
It was a reminder that Self-care isn’t selfish; it’s necessary! Take time for yourself, embrace kindness, and live healthier every day. Self-care is essential for our overall well-being! By prioritizing self-care, we can reduce stress, anxiety & depression. Let’s make self-care a habit! Let’s make it a Lifestyle.
The session created a safe space for different advocates from 25 organisation and they were able to share without judgement but also set boundaries. It was a gentle reminder that care also includes treating ourselves and others with compassion, dignity and respect. Self and collective care is essential in movements. As we model just and care-cantered lives, it is important that we value care in ourselves, with each other and in our collectives.
Advocates were encouraged to be gentle with themselves, to give themselves space to make mistakes because they are human, we can not be perfect all the time. There will be days where we will do an excellent job to practice self-care and there are days where we may fail – but that’s okay.
They were encouraged to create a routine that has self-care elements in it. For example, doing simple exercises at home, going for walks at least 3 times a week and eating healthy. They were also encouraged to give themselves social media breaks because they are equally important.
Asking for help is very okey. Do not underestimate the power of your networks.
Remember- The act of self-care is not just a one-day thing, you need to continuously work on it in order to be effective.
The greatest gift you can ever give your family and the world is a Healthier, Happier version of You.
