On June 21, 2025, in the city of Gulu hundreds of people gathered for the 3rd Edition of the Gulu Menstrual Hygiene Run. This year’s theme was “Run for Dignity,” emphasizing the importance of supporting girls and women, especially those facing challenges during their monthly periods. As Wezesha Girls Network Uganda, we participated in the run and our participation stood out because they helped a girl in a wheelchair attend the run with dignity and joy.
As a Network we believe that every girl deserves respect and support, regardless of her circumstances. When we heard about the Menstrual Hygiene Run, we decided to join the cause. Our team spread awareness about the event on social media
On the day of the run, members arrived early and set up a booth near the starting line. They handed out free menstrual products and answered questions from runners. But their most meaningful act was supporting Anna Peace who uses a wheelchair. Anna wished to join the run but was worried she wouldn’t have the right supplies or support.
Wezesha, we got to learn about Anna peace through a community member who reached out to us via our social media platform (X formerly twitter) Before the run, our team at Wezesha Girls Network, provided her with reusable pads, a specially designed sports top, and a water bottle and also got volunteers to push her wheelchair during the run.
On the day of the Run, Anna peace wore her new gear with pride. As the race began, Wezesha members stayed by her side, cheering her on as she participated in the run. Though the 35-kilometer run was tough, Anna completed it with a mixture of both joy and tiresome. She told the Wezesha Girls Network members that she felt like she belonged and that the run had made her realize that her disability couldn’t stop her from doing great things.”
