In commemoration of the International Day of Family, Wezesha Girls Network Uganda proudly joined the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development to reflect, celebrate and act under the theme: “The Impact of Urbanisation on Families in Uganda.”

Families are more than just people living under one roof, they are the heart of our society, they are where we first learn love, values and the strength to face life, they are the foundation on which our communities and nation are built. Families is where we learn right from teaching respect to shaping character, families give us the tools we need to contribute positively to Uganda’s growth.

At the event, voices came together to discuss how urbanisation is changing the way families live and relate. In towns and cities, families face new opportunities but also new challenges from the high cost of living and limited space, to the pressures of modern lifestyles and these changes can weaken family bonds if we are not intentional about protecting them.

For Wezesha Girls Network Uganda, this conversation matters deeply. Strong families are key to raising confident, empowered and responsible young people. When children grow up in families filled with love, respect and clear values, they are more likely to prioritise and protect family life as adults.

Our presence at the International Day of Families was a reminder of our commitment to building families and not breaking them. At Wezesha Girls Network, we believe in creating safe and supportive environments where girls can thrive because when girls are nurtured in strong families, they become women who nurture strong communities.

The celebration was also a call to action for parents to invest more time in their children, for communities to protect family unity and for leaders to create policies that strengthen and not strain the family unit. Urbanisation does not have to mean the loss of connection with effort, it can mean growth, opportunity and stronger family values.

As Wezesha Girls Network Uganda, we will continue to champion families because strong families build strong girls and strong girls build a strong nation.
